Rader
became ill late in 1967 and took a year off. Since there
is no gap in his Midwood work, we surmise that they were
working from a backlog and reusing old art. He returned
to work in 1968. At least one Rader collector told me she
found his later covers much poorer than his earlier work.
She didn’t know it, but the period she pinpointed was
after his illness. (I don’t completely agree however.
I know some of the later work is not up to his earlier standards,
but a few of the last covers are phenomenal. Like this next
one.)
